Another great image photographed by my good friend Percy Mui. I was trying very hard not to smile, hence the half amused look on my face. Going from happy to serious in 2.3 seconds isn't as easy as it sounds.
Please do not take this photo, as it belongs to Percy and not myself. Thanks!
I just finished my classic Leia costume recently, but I'm having trouble getting the buns to stay! Do you have any tips for getting them to shape correctly? I have bobby pins and hair nets... but I'm having issues getting that perfect cinnamon bun shape!
^_^ Thank you!! It’s hard work to get myself looking accurate in the costume, but its fun!
Now, bun tips for you.
I use a combination of my real hair and two fake hair pieces I picked up at Walgreens (amazing what you can find at that place). The hair comes with a jaw clip. Take the jaw clip out, and you can use the hair! If you study pictures of Carrie Fisher in the Leia ANH gown, the buns actually cover 90% of the sides of her entire head. Unfortunately, it’s near impossible to replicate it on that scale, but I’ve figured out a few tricks to make the buns look presentable. ^_^
Must Haves For Leia Buns: -loads of heavy hairspray -two fake hair pieces to use in combination with your real hair -special hairpins (you can find them at Walgreens. They have a circular top with two thick prongs, I’m not sure of the name of the clip though.)
What I do, is I take my real hair, separate it into two ponytails and position the hair band right above the top of my ear. The trick here is to backcomb each ponytail, hairspray it to death, then gently wind the hair (which should now look fluffy and sticky with hair spray) around into loose little buns, making sure to position each bun right over the hair band, and the hair is going away from the face. That makes it stick out a bit, which is what you want. Then, take the fake hair pieces and add them in. Put the base of the hairpieces right behind the bun near the base of the ear, and wind the hair loosely around it. Keeping it loose is the key to making it look fuller. ^_^
Wow, thank you so much for the tips! I appreciate it so much, seriously! This should definitely help a lot, and I am saving this in a word document so I don't lose it... lol! I have done Leia buns once before, but my hairpieces were braided and not twisted as they should be, so they weren't accurate. I have the pony tail thing down pretty well, but when it comes to twisting them and getting the hairpieces to stay, I have a little trouble. I might try the Walgreen's hairpieces if mine don't work the next time around. I bought mine at a wig shop and it's pretty difficult to keep them in shape if they're not braided because there's just so much hair, which is good for getting fullness but really hard to keep in place! I'll try them again sometime soon and let you know how I do! Thanks again!
